Chairman – Mark Frischmuth
Mark conceived of and founded DemocracyLab. Professionally, he works as a pension wholesaler, and is the owner and President of RMS NW, Inc. He travels throughout the Northwest working with financial advisors to deliver effective retirement plan solutions to their corporate clients.

Secretary – Michael Riley
Michael is the Managing Partner of Riley Research Associates, specializing in market research and public opinion polling. He is the past president of the Oregon Chapter of the American Marketing Association, an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America (APR), and holds a Professional Researcher Certification.

Deborah Bryant
Deborah Bryant is Public Sector Communities Manager at Oregon State University, where she works within the intersection of academia, industry and government around Open Source issues and activities. She brings with her the perspective of twenty years management and operational experience in information technology from both private and public sectors. Ms Bryant serves as a member of the Governor’s Open Technology Industry Cluster and directs the annual Government Open Source Conference. Ms. Bryant is also responsible for outreach and education programs for Oregon State University’s Open Source Lab, which hosts some of the largest Open Source projects in the world as well as hosting the master Linux Kernel.

Prior to joining OSU, Ms. Bryant worked for 4 years in Oregon state government, serving as Manager of Enterprise Strategic Planning and Policy in the Office of the State CIO and also as Deputy State CIO. Prior to entering the pubic sector, Deborah held management positions in a number of emerging technology areas; parallel and high-speed computing and commercialized internet and web applications in the 80s, commercial wide area networks, advanced telecommunications and data/voice convergence in the 90s.

Scott Davis
Scott is the Principal of From the Rooftops, where he has helped some of the world’s leading brands with challenges such as new product/service launches, effective brand architecture strategy and messaging, long- and short-term strategic planning, and corporate re-branding. A featured speaker for organizations ranging from the American Marketing Association to the Rotary, and published thought leader on the subjects of research and branding, Scott brings his expertise and unique point of view to every client challenge.

Bjorn Freeman-Benson
Bjorn is the Director for Committer Community at the Eclipse Foundation, a position that is tailor-made for someone with his keen interest and experience in building high-quality software with geographically distributed teams. He has dabbled in applications and user interfaces, but returns, like the swallows to San Juan Capistrano, to his three foci: hardware, software, and process (embedded devices, programming languages, and software engineering). Bjorn has worked for OTI, Amazon.com, Rational, and Gemstone, along with a career as a university professor. He has a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Washington, and is happy to talk at length about his passion for orienteering and/or his love of flying.

Allison Handler
Allison is the Principal of the Heron River Group, a Portland-based nonprofit consulting firm. Previously, Allison worked as the executive director of the Portland Community Land Trust. She has also established a community land trust in Missoula, Montana and worked as a city planner for the city of Missoula. She holds a master of science in environment studies from the University of Montana and a bachelor of arts in philosophy from Williams College. Allison serves on the board of directors for the National Community Land Trust Network. She is an avid cyclist and plays the banjo.

Andy Van Oostrum
Andy is a Web and Communications Strategist, with a focus on relationship, word of mouth, and social marketing. He works as a Strategic Account Manager at ISITE Design, Inc. a global interactive agency serving clients from offices in Boston, Dallas and Portland.

Andy has degrees in International Business, Management, and Japanese from Oklahoma State and Kansai Gaidai University, and a passion for all things eMarketing. He is the Program Director for the Oregon Chapter of the American Marketing Association, and is on the marketing committee for Oregon150.org.


 

Board of Advisors

Dr Harry Anastasiou
Dr Harry Anastasiou is a core faculty at the Conflict Resolution Graduate Program and an affiliate of International Studies at Portland State University, USA. He is a long-standing academic in inter-ethnic and international Peace and Conflict Studies, and an experienced practitioner of conflict-resolution. Anastasiou has played a leading role in inter-ethnic rapprochement in the ethnically divided island of Cyprus and in Greek-Turkish relations. He has also been a participating member of "The Harvard Study Group," a bi-communal think tank addressing the Cyprus problem. From a Peace Studies perspective, he has published works on Cyprus, Nationalism, Peace Building and the EU.

Rob Bole
Rob serves as the Senior Vice President of One Economy Corporation's Media Division. He manages One Economy's media strategy, including the growth and management of the nonprofit’s five media properties. In this position, Rob oversees One Economy's web development, creative services, rich media production, media properties and consumer services, including the localization of the web sites in over forty different communities worldwide.

Rob has over fifteen years of experience in managing nonprofit programs, including work for The Enterprise Foundation, the City of Portland, and the City of Philadelphia. He has an undergraduate degree from George Washington University and a Master's from University of Pennsylvania.

Adam Davis
Adam is a partner in Davis, Hibbitts & Midghall, Inc., an opinion research and consultation firm in Portland that specializes in public policy and planning projects. Since 1977, he has been doing statewide telephone surveys and completing focus groups across the state. Adam has also completed many research projects to support strategic planning efforts for clients ranging from the Oregon Economic Development Department to the Oregon University System, and he has assisted ballot measure and candidate campaigns. He designed the 1992 and 2002 Oregon Values and Beliefs Studies and continues to research values and beliefs related to issues ranging from education and land use to public health and economic development. Adam is a graduate of Portland State University and the University of Oregon School of Law.

Ryan Deckert
Ryan Deckert is President of the Oregon Business Association.
Ryan previously served as State Senator, representing Senate District 14, which includes much of Beaverton and Aloha, as well as Garden Home and Raleigh Hills. For the 2007 legislative session, Senator Deckert was the chairman of the Senate Finance & Revenue Committee, as well as a member of the Ways & Means Education Subcommittee, and the Business, Transportation, & Workforce Development Committee. Senator Deckert previously served two terms in the State House of Representatives. During this time he was a member of the Oregon Internet Commission and was on the advisory board of the U.S. Internet Council.

Jerry Elliott
Jerry is President of Elliott, Ostrander & Preston, a law firm founded in 1995. Jerry assists clients on business, real estate and nonprofit matters, including formations, financings, mergers and acquisitions, and he provides general counsel to closely-held companies. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School and the University of Illinois College of Engineering, magna cum laude. He previously practiced with McDermott, Will & Emery and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton in Los Angeles, where he specialized in business transactions, securities law, and venture capital financings. Mr. Elliott is a member of the Oregon, Washington and California State Bars. He also participates in Rotary and in many other community organizations, including serving as a board member for various nonprofits.

Sue C. Hildick
Sue has been involved in public policy, advocacy and non-profit management for over fifteen years. Sue holds a bachelor’s degree in government from Georgetown University and she has worked as legislative director to former U.S. Senator Mark O. Hatfield, as government relations director for Oregon Health Sciences University and as executive director of the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross. The common link in all of her work has been her passion for deepening the quality of life in Oregon.

Sue is currently the President of Foundations for a Better Oregon and the Chalkboard Project. The Chalkboard Project is a unique collaboration from five of Oregon’s largest foundations to unite Oregonians around a new vision for its K-12 public schools. Through a civic engagement process involving citizen input and academic research, Chalkboard has identified the nexus between public will in Oregon and best known educational practices, resulting in a 15-point Action Plan to improve the quality, accountability and financing of Oregon’s schools.

Sue was recently named Nonprofit CEO of the Year (2007) by the Portland Business Journal and has been recognized in 2006 and 2004 as one of Oregon’s Fifty Great Leaders by Oregon Business Magazine.

Tom Jackson, JD, MBA, PhD
Tom is the co-founder of taktx, LLC, a management consulting firm with clients worldwide. He previously worked as an attorney for the Department of Energy, and as a professor of business at the University of Vermont. Tom recently won the Shingo prize for Excellence in Research for his new book, Hoshin Kanri for the Lean Enterprise.

Phil Keisling
Phil is Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing for Core Source Technologies, a 150-person IT, software development, and technology services company based in Beaverton Oregon. He is responsible for sales, strategic marketing initiatives, and business development.

From 1991-99, Keisling served as Oregon Secretary of State, where he managed a 200 person agency and promoted a number of key initiatives, including performance auditing, moving the state's Business Registry on-line, and making Oregon the first (and still only) state to hold all elections in a Vote By Mail format. Keisling’s other political experience includes two years in the Oregon House of Representatives; three years as a staff assistant to former House Speaker Vera Katz; a brief stint in 1978 as a speechwriter for Tom McCall’s gubernatorial campaign. His professional career also includes 6 years as a journalist, as an investigative reporter for Portland's Willamette Week and as an editor of the Washington Monthly magazine in Washington D.C.

Tom Kelly
Tom became President of Neil Kelly Design/Build Remodeling in 1979 and in the years since, has built the business into the region’s largest remodeling firm by doing quality work, respecting his employees and clients, and championing Portland’s neighborhoods and citizens.

In 1997, the firm embraced the principles of The Natural Step, as a progressive way of approaching daily business that reduces environmental impact and boosts efficiency. Clients will clearly note Neil Kelly Company’s environmental ethic as part of every proposal and every project.

Over the years, Tom has served in a number of national and regional industry and community positions, while demonstrating the importance of continual professional improvement and underscoring the need to nurture Portland’s neighborhoods.

Lynn Lundquist
Lynn is the past President of the Oregon Business Association. His past experience includes service as Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives.

John Schmitt
John Schmitt is the founder and President of OakTree Digital, an Internet design and development agency. Their client list includes companies such as Intel, FEI, OHSU, FLIR, Pacific Crest, Cadence Management Corporation and many others. John is on the board of the Oregon Chapter of the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS). John earned a BA in Economics and a MBA in MIS from the University of Minnesota.
